
The lady lion volleyball team traveled to Midland College for the first matches of the season. On the 22nd, the lions faced up with New Mexico Junior College, region rivals. Standouts for the match included the 2nd Team All Conference returning sophomores, Nikaia Lydia and Kendall Toliver. Lydia put up the highest kills count for the team with 11, along with 7 digs, while Toliver added 22 digs in the libero jersey. Sophomore Martyna Lewinska further made her first mark as a lady lion with 26 assists, 5 digs, and 4 kills. The lions dropped the first match, then came back the next day to take a 4 set win against Lee College.
Against Lee College, freshman Emily Metzler made some big plays for the lady lions, putting up her best of 15 kills in the match, followed by Lydia who added another 12 to her count. Toliver again, put up big numbers with 23 digs. Lewinska further added 40 assists for the match along with 13 digs to help contribute to the first official win of the season.
Against the home team, Midland College, the lady lions competed hard but fell short in three sets. Lydia added another 11 kills, along with freshman standout Joy-Lece Bateman who put up 10 kills for the lions, with a .368 hitting percentage. Bateman also put up 4 blocks in the match. In the final match of the tournament, the lady lions dropped a competitive one to Panola College.
Next up for the lady lions is the Blinn College Invitational tournament in Brenham, August 29th-31st. Go lions!
