Lady Lions Tennis Ends Fall Season at Collin College
GAINESVILLE, TX --- On Friday, October 11th, the Lady Lions Tennis and Coach Brian Waddell headed to Plano, TX for their last Fall Season tournament, as the 2019 Fall Cougar Women's Open was taking place at Collin College. The tournament consisted of three Singles and three Doubles Draws, playing at both Allen High School and Collin College tennis complexes.
The tournament began on Friday at 1pm after a four-hour rain delay. In Flight 1, Birthe Nulens (Sophomore) lost to Alexandra Abyasova of Barton in straight sets by the score of 3-6 4-6. Then, Annunciata De-Souza (Freshman) defeated Elizaveta Tregubova of Southeastern Oklahoma in two sets (6-1 6-3). In Flight 2, Yanniek Voogel (Freshman) defeated Lily Hostteter, seed #4, of Collin by the score of 6-1 6-4; Annabella Natalini, seed #2, did the same to Melissa Mclain of University of Southwestern as she won by double 6-1. In Flight 3, Alexandra Beyer (Freshman) lost to Mariah Gonzalez of Collin by the score of 1-6 1-6, while Mariangela Mendoza (Sophomore), in a tight match, lost to Jayci Wong of Lamar by the score of 7-6(4) 2-6 6-10. In the second round, De-Souza beat Denise Simonetti, seed #3, of Lamar in three sets by the score of 0-6 6-3 10-8; Voogel did the same to Venus Ubiebi of NMMI as she won 6-0 4-6 10-6; while Natalini defeated Nina Sergeev of Southeastern Oklahoma in two sets (6-1 6-3). In Consolation 1, Nulens got a bye; while, in Consolation 3, Beyer beat Hoang (8-0), and Mendoza did the same to Zambrano (8-0).
Later on Friday, double matches started. First on were De-Souza/Nulens, in Flight 1, who lost to Palatte/Ulander, seed #2, of Tarleton by the score of 5-8. In Flight 2, Mendoza/Natalini did the same to Lima/Reguera of Barton, as they lost by 3-8. While in Flight 3, Beyer/Voogel got a bye in the first round.
On Saturday morning, in the semifinals of Flight 1, De-Souza lost to Alicia Barbaroux, seed #2, of Tarleton in straight sets (5-7 3-6). In Flight 2, Voogel lost to Nathalie Ulandar, seed #1, of Tarleton by double 3-6; Natalini did the same to Ana Jolic, seed #3, of Lamar, as she lost by the score of 0-6 6-3 3-10. Then, in Consolation 1, Nulens lost to Palatte (2-8). In Consolation 3, Beyer lost to Routledge by the score of 3-8; while Mendoza beat Clark losing only one game (8-1) and sealed her pass to the Consolation 3 Final, where she lost to Routledge by the score of 4-8.
In Doubles Consolation 1, De-Souza/Nulens got a bye in the first round, and then, in the final, they beat Acosta/Von-Peschke by the score of 8-4. Mendoza/Natalini, in Consolation 2, did the same to Fulgenzi/Ubiebi, as they won the final by 8-3. In Flight 3, Beyer/Voogel defeated Maldonado/Mcdermott of Collin by the score of 8-4 and sealed their pass to the final, where they beat Lozano/Routledge of Southeastern Oklahoma by 8-3.
The Lady Lions won a total of 14 matches -9 Singles and 5 Doubles- and brought home a gold medal (Beyer/Voogel).
